Ray Doktor, Psy. D. is a counselor, relationship coach, and international speaker. He has a master’s degree in counseling psychology and a doctorate in clinical psychology. He combines the Western model with Eastern philosophy providing a bridge between metaphysics and science.
Procrastination is an energy sucker. This is what Bobbi told me when she came for our first session together. “I’m tired of getting by-passed for the positions I’m capable of.” Bobbi worked as a top administrator in a manufacturing firm.
Bobbie acknowledged she dressed like a slob for work. “Why bother, no one else dresses very professionally. Even my supervisor is a slob.” Bobbi’s procrastination is a mis-guided form of self-protection that leads to low self-esteem, lethargy and depression. Procrastination has a direct link to our emotional comfort range. That’s a GOOD thing because it reveals sub-conscious fears. It’s harmful when we don’t pay attention or examine those fears.
Bobbi hated herself because she took out her frustration on her husband and two teenage kids. Her primary frustration was her superior intellect was under utilized. She turned it into arrogance because she didn’t know how to express her feelings. Her procrastination drained her life force and was getting expressed sideways through passive aggressive behavior toward her closest loved ones. Procrastination is a powerful energy! When we dwell in it long enough it builds up steam that either implodes (think lost job and relationship opportunities, digestive problems, auto-immune, cancers etc.) or explodes in tempermental outbursts like Jack’s road rage.
It wasn’t till halfway through the session that Bobbi revealed she thought she had a lump in her armpit and was too terrified to see a doctor. Here’s what we did together.
We began to explore how to express and harness that energy of frustration and how to re-direct it. It takes guidance and it takes interaction. The interactive body/mind therapy exercises were both playful and scary for Bobbi. She never experienced a process that took her so far away from the grip of her intellect. Bobbi came back to our next session. “I did “tons of research on energy healing and I’m not sure I believe it.”
Not everything can be learned over the internet. There are times when learning about ourselves requires ways to safely explore our reactivity and interactions with others through direct expression and contact. Bobbie was a prime candidate for group work. Bobbi started to pay attention inwardly to the call of her heart and soul. She began to make holistic decisions not based solely on her intellectual mind.
There is a doorway to transformation for a fearless heart. It requires active interaction. The hero’s journey requires closing the book, putting on your trekking shoes and moving your body down the path. It means getting out of your comfort zone and enduring the excitement of learning how to tolerate change.

Here’s what happened next…
Jack came in to our second session with a surprise. He was pale and clearly his body was in a state of shock. He sat down in front of me and told me what happened with the tone of a journalist reporting the five o’clock news. Jack was in a car accident. His car was totaled but he was able to force the door open and walk away. He was on his way home and exiting the off ramp from the freeway. The driver in front of him was on her cell phone. As was typical of Jack, he aggressively laid on his horn. He then became aware that his reactive ‘switch’ had gone off and he remembered to breathe. He let up on the horn just as the driver in front of him slammed on her brakes. Jack slammed on his brakes and did not hit her but the pick up truck to his rear plowed into him and knocked Jack’s car into the car in front of him. Jack’s car was crushed both in front and back.
Miraculously no one was hurt and most of the damage happened to Jack’s car. Jack shared with me that the only thought going through his mind in that moment was, “It’s not my fault, it’s not my fault.” Although he was pretty sure it wasn’t, everything happened so fast that he felt somehow it could have been. He also had the thought that this was some kind of weird retribution for all the road rage he’d enacted. Jack was dismayed when the cell phone woman got out of the car. She was probably the same age as his daughter, 20 or 21 years old. She look terrified and burst into tears.
As Jack told the story he felt remorse, not just about what happened to this young girl but as he was talking, the faces of all the drivers that he’d threatened during the coarse of his road rage career came flashing through his mind. Jacks body started quivering uncontrollably in a healthy trauma release for about five minutes. When his body normalized, he described feeling ‘shattered’ and a softness entered his entire being. A layer of tension in Jack’s body seemed to melt away as he let a few tears trickle down his cheeks. Slowly Jack and I transition to practicing the grounding and breathing technique he learned the previous week. It was a whole new experience this time. Jack could actually feel himself, his arms, legs and body in a way he never had. He felt his heart open. He thought of his wife in that moment and a flood of acceptance for her needs and his own, integrated in his mind.
Jack remembered his vital need to spend time in the mountains. In this state of acceptance Jack opened himself to his waylaid calling. He remembered a few ideas from the past such as, becoming a boy scout leader or volunteering to be a tour guide in one of the canyon parks, but never followed through with any of it. He reconsidered now and got excited about new possibilities.
When we reflected on the tension of Jack’s road rage, Jack discovered that at its core lived an enormity of creative energy. When the energy of tension was mobilized, it integrated with Jack’s heart and he opened to the possibility of new positive directions. We’ll talk more about how you can identify and access the core gift that lives in the wound on the free teleconference call Wednesday June 1st at 6 pm. And don’t forget on the call we’re going to offer free gift just for listening in! And we’re going to tell you about the Gift in the Wound series that starts in July and only comes around once every three years. If you haven’t registered for the call yet, you can still get on board. Click here to register NOW.
Jack is a fictional character whose story is based on real life events of real clients. Jack had a classic problem with road rage. If you met Jack, you would never know it. A university professor who taught biology, Jack’s demeanor was quiet and friendly, he has the kind of friendly vibe that would make you want to sit down next to him in a coffee shop even if you didn’t know him. Jack hated everything about the LA freeway. He lived here only because his wife was in ‘the industry’. He complained that she was semi-successful in small roles on tv sit-coms and made for tv movies but she could never quite break-through to the leading lady status she wanted. He loved her, so he stayed in LA. But not without resentment. His heart was in the mountains and woods of Colorado where he grew up. Jack hated himself for this resentment and everyone on the 405 freeway knew it. His road rage was like an obsession. He had a love/hate relationship with it. On his good days, he almost forgot about his commitment to hating rush hour and on his bad days he would tailgate, intimidate other drivers and weave through traffic. Jack described his reactivity as a ‘switch’ that would go off in his head when he would get in the car after work. It began as something that would happen only when he had bad days but lately he noticed it would happen sometimes even on his good days. This scared Jack and motivated him to seek help. He tried lots of traditional therapies but the problem persisted. Jack wanted an immediate ‘end’ to his reactivity so he was willing to try a body mind approach through energy Healing. Though we both knew there were several layers to his reactivity we began with a simple tip I’ll share with you now. What happened as a result was surprising to both of us.
The first intervention I did with Jack was education, both cognitively and somatically. I explained to Jack how to recognize which part of his brain was in reactivity. Paul MacLean developed a triune brain model based on the brains evolutionary development. This model explains three parts of our brain as they grow and develop in the womb, and its relationship to functions that range from basic survival to sophisticated thought formulation. Our most primitive responses are originally developed in the brain stem or reptilian brain, which governs basic bodily functions, such as the flight or flight response. Road rage is most often associated with a reptilian brain response. Jack was accurate in his description when he said it felt like a ‘switch’ went off in his head. He was describing the biochemical responses of animalistic survival. Just knowing that part of his brain was dominating his reactivity Jack felt relieved. He did not like his reactivity. It was not his nature to feel mean and angry. I taught Jack a breathing and grounding technique he could use to mitigate his reactivity.
I’ll tell you how Jack did it and an ironic and surprising circumstance that happened in an email next week. And by the way, in case you didn’t receive the previous email, I’ll be dialoguing with a brilliant teacher, Deborah Allen about the Triune brain and the Gift in the Wound, in a free Teleconference where we’ll offer a step-by-step intervention process in the June 1st at 6 pm.
